#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/14/25

It started to warm up in Boston, and while I didn't have a lot of time I was still able to go on a shorter run while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) Cyborg Workers conference. Standouts for me were the initial session with Renny Hahamovitch (anxieties and hopes of the space age worker), Eszter Bartha (automation in the GDR and Hungary), and Craig Gent (getting real with management), as well as the opening keynote on day 2 by Jason Resnikoff (technology, management, and worker power). Highly recommend the whole event

Next was an interesting talk by Shubham Tulsiani on reconstructing and generating 3D objects/scenes at the GRASP Lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjFA_F04tRA
Next was a great pair of talks by Aileen Nielsen (empiricism and privacy) and Mehdi Arfaoui (interface between science and regulation) at the University of Maryland College of Information (INFO) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r16vrE1tBpU
Next was a nice talk by Jason Hong on helping developers with privacy at the Carnegie Mellon University Software and Societal Systems Department (CMUSSS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsVt-Pm7zoE
Next was an incredible talk by Arjun Subramonian on reorienting NLP towards justice at the USC Information Sciences Institute. Subramonian takes on one of my most hated terms, "democratization," in addition to other problematic framings, and examines how the community can change practices to advance positive societal outcomes. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl6MIbqvPIQ
Next was a thought-provoking talk by Hank Lee on privacy in the age of AI at CMUSSS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SixM1ggebfs
Next was an intriguing talk by Tan Zhi-Xuan on using human reasoning and decision models to improve AI alignment at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYFPzyWEa6U
Last was an excellent talk by Michael Feffer on red-teaming's role in ensuring safe, secure, and trustworthy generative AI systems at CMUSSS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntM5gg9jni0
