#AcademicRunPlaylist - 10/27/25

I ran over to the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University for a great talk by Miyajima Hideaki on Japanese corporate governance (video will hopefully be posted soon), and on the way I listened to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an engaging conversation with Maria Lucia Passador on challenges, benefits, and different approaches to loyalty voting on the Business Scholarship Podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jAfjqQOPSg
Next was an interesting talk by Alan Yuille on 3D vision language models at the GRASP lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12q0JTAERD0
Next was a great talk by Yonina Eldar on efficient and interpretable model-based deep learning approaches for sensing and imaging at the Network Science Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4AIMQCNbq8
Last was "Revolusi" by David Van Reybrouck. Replicating the successful formula he used in Congo, Van Reybrouck combines historical analysis with interviews of representative people from across the different players in the period before and during Indonesia's drive to independence. The importance of the Japanese occupation was enlightening for me, as was how this struggle played a critical role in defining the role and reach of the UN. The close relationship of the major revolutionaries, while shared with other independence struggles, was also fascinating, as was the unfortunate role of Western powers in driving these forces apart. Much of this strikes me as a potential alternate history of Vietnam's more challenging march towards independence, and I would love to see that contrast followed up in future work. Highly recommend https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324073697
