#AcademicRunPlaylist - 10/8/24

A selfie of me in the common area of the Human Dynamics group at the MIT Media Lab. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing glasses with a top metal rim and a pink button up shirt. There are two red Steelcase fabric chairs around a round, white glass table behind me, and a variety of plants perched atop bookcases, wire racks, and more outside the doors to individual offices, which have glass windows

It was great to be at the MIT Media Lab's member week kickoff today, and after giving a talk titled "Dumpster Fires and Management" I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an excellent panel on EU law and strategic litigation at the Digital Markets Research Hub with Elaine Fahey, Giulia Gentile, and Sabine Saurugger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prky3HL4Ia8

Next was an talks by Deasy Pane and Natanael Waraney Gerald Massie on the impact of trade liberalization with China on Indonesian poverty at the Crawford School of Public Policy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZJNGnZV2hs

Next was a fantastic conversation with Jake Okechukwu Effoduh on the importance of AI explain ability and bringing the Global South to the forefront of AI governance on the Lawfare podcast. Effoduh clearly articulates the issues with many current AI systems in their development and deployment, then effectively hammers home the reasons why the Global South should be centered in many AI regulatory efforts. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XsFEpeTk5o

Next was a fascinating discussion with Brian Highsmith on governing company towns on the Digging a Hole Legal Theory Podcast. After starting with the legal and historical definitions of company towns, the conversation gets into the problematic aspects of these entities for the economy and democracy. Highly recommend https://www.diggingaholepodcast.com/episodes/highsmith

Last was a great talk by Allison Okamura on soft wearable haptic devices for ubiquitous communication (which dovetailed nicely with some of the talks I listened to at the Media Lab) at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jSOWTS4BFk
