#AcademicRunPlaylist - 2/9/25

We got some nice snow in Boston last night, so before heading in to watch the Eagles hopefully beat the Chiefs I got out to enjoy the sights and a listen to a book for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
Today I listened to "Our Voices, Our Histories: Asian American and Pacific Islander Women," edited by Shirley Hune and Gail Nomura. This research compilation presents an excellent foray into the historical experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander women from many geographies, in addition to strong analytical work that bridges those experiences to the present. In addition there are a number of more in depth, qualitative chapters that dig into a few figures and their impact.
I especially liked the chapters that spent time on the history of specific Pacific islands and their subsequent entanglement with the US. The chapter on Sāmoan American women by Manumaua Luafata Simanu-Klutz was particularly enlightening, as was the chapter by Sharleen Santos-Bamba and Anne Hattori on language, women, and the Chamorros of Guam. Highly recommend the whole book https://nyupress.org/9781479877010/our-voices-our-histories/
