#AcademicRunPlaylist - 1/28/25

A selfie of me next to an ice sculpture of what I believe is Marshall from Paw Patrol. I'm a middle-aged white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing a black winter hat, black sunglasses, and a bright orange bicycle zipped up sweater.

On my run home from the car repair shop I happened upon this guy before he melted and listened to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting panel on how advances in AI will change consumer protection and financial stability at the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative with Randy Kroszner, Thomas Philippon, and Antoinette Schoar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cil6P9tr0_8&t=1s

Next was a great talk by Eva Micheler on an institutional theory for corporate law at the Cambridge Faculty of Law https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5ArVP0jY2A

Next was a fantastic panel on how AI is changing labor market opportunities and how we can rethink our design of technological systems with John Horton, Sendhil Mullainathan, and Lindsey Raymond. Mullainathan's thoughts on moving away from the current single output metric optimization mode of AI is more important than ever. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXRt-nm4JQQ

Next was a compelling talk by Shaolei Ren on quantifying and minimizing the public health impact of AI at the UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PrfkBtclQU

Next was an excellent discussion between friends of the playlist Seth Harris and Aaron Sojourner on the 2024 NLRB union member survey results at the Burnes Center for Social Change. The results aren't surprising but are certainly discouraging, especially given the extremely chaotic policies coming down the pipe. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2x2sLqdYUg

Last was an intriguing talk by Joshua Garcia on uncovering software defects in autonomous driving systems at UCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvLjvoNdBq0
