#AcademicRunPlaylist - 9/6/24

A selfie of me with my medium sized black dog sleeping on my lap. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing glasses with a metal top rim and a grey t-shirt with icons of different Final Fantasy 7 characters on it

It was nice to end the week with this guy catching a nap on me, and while he got some shuteye I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was the workshop on computer vision in the built environment at #CVPR2024. I particularly liked the talk by Caitlin Mueller on using a variety of innovative algorithmic methods to design more sustainable structures https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPX459hvku4

Next was a great pair of talks at Deep Learning Indaba by Fiskani Banda (LLM fine-tuning to capture domain-specific multilingual data for building tools to aid South African farmers) and Judy Gichoya (how machine learning shortcut learning accentuates biases in medical imaging) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfH5rEaR9-k

Next was an informative talk by Christian T. Lundblad on this month's US employment data at the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. Lundblad gives a level-headed analysis of the numbers and makes a compelling case for further investment in statistical agencies to provide timely data to the public and policy makers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkFyk4DY9rI

Next was an excellent talk by Pierfrancesco Beneventano on how to think about stochastic gradient descent and its regularizations effects at MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G70dA2tmbu0

Last was a fantastic panel on the increasing complexity of EU data transfers following the Dutch DPA's Uber fine at the Future of Privacy Forum with friends of the playlist Jules Polonetsky and Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna along with Christopher Kuner and Odia Kagan. The conversation clearly articulated a lot of the concerns multinationals should have coming out of this decision and the increasingly muddy state of data protection jurisprudence in the EU. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p0jn_I9GuY
