#AcademicRunPlaylist - 8/4/24

Two swans and two cygnets (one mostly obscured by leaves from a tree on the near shore), on the curve of a winding stream on a partly cloudy day

The cygnets are getting much bigger, and while watching some of the local wildlife I also was able to listen to a bunch of talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an incredible conversation with Marcia Chatelain on the complex relationship between fast food restaurants, black capitalists, and civil rights leaders at the Hagley Museum and Library. Chatelain lays out the stark contrast of McDonald's serving an important social function - creating an institution that Black diners could enter without fear of death - to the lack of economic benefit for the vast majority of the population. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gugX1u_K1LA

Next was an excellent talk by Angus Deaton on the difficulties of measuring global poverty and inequality at the LSE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSI9NR-YCAk

Next was an interesting discussion with Dan Traficonte on patents and postwar innovation policy in the US at the Hagley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnekYBvEAZo&t=12s

Next was an intriguing talk by Edward Relph on the evolution of placelessness at UNSW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gXqkq3zTzk

Next was an engaging conversation with Grace Ong Yan on the development of architectural branding by corporations, with a focus on the PSFS building, at the Hagley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6oIdfwaB3w

Next was a wide-ranging talk by Sarah Wigglesworth on architectural models in which people have greater control of the built environment through all stages of the development process at the RSA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8emZNRr1Plg

Last was the Hagley's three part forum on the history and impact of the Avon company, with Katina Manko (overview of the Avon archives), Emanuela Scarpellini (Avon International in Italy), Shawn Moura (Avon's encounter with gender, race, and class in Brazil), Jessica Chelekis (Avon in the Brazilian Amazon), Lindsey Feitz (Avon, CSR, and race in the 70s), and Jessica Burch (direct sales, work, and capitalism)
