#AcademicRunPlaylist - 7/27/24

A selfie of me in front of a Juniper. I'm a bald, middle-aged white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing glasses with a steel top rim and a blue shirt

It was a lovely Saturday here in Boston, and I got to complement the weather with some talks from my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was the final day of the National Bureau of Economic Research urban economics conference. I particularly liked the talks by Lorenzo Incoronato (place-based industrial policies and agglomeration), Veronika Penciakova (local origins of business formation), Eunjee Kwon (impact of high speed rail on gender differences in the South Korean local labor markets), and David Lagakos (economic development and spatial distribution of income in cities) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMBBQ2gaOV4

Next was a wide-ranging talk by John Ruggie on regulating multinational corporations at the UCL Faculty of Laws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYJYT7nSxnY

Next was an excellent talk by Paul Lane on African cultural heritage and economic development at CRASSH https://youtube.com/watch?v=FarirYmjj-M

Next was an intriguing talk by Michael Keane on the role of human capital and other phenomena on the labor supply at the Royal Economic Society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wMYXMIp5dI

Last was an interesting talk by Prasad Balkundi on a meta-analysis of tie strength and individual effectiveness at the SONIC Research Group. This is a good look at the breadth of research in this area, showing the importance of cultural and organizational context in interpreting network metrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr7uOZ5kvtk
