#AcademicRunPlaylist - 7/24/24

A view of the MIT Media Lab from a parking lot across the street on a cloudy day. It's a metallic, gray building, and red brick buildings flank it on either side, with the brutalist MIT Green building rising behind it

I waved to the MIT Media Lab as I went in to teach the final day of my exec ed course along with Alex 'Sandy' Pentland today, and afterwards I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was the second day of the National Bureau of Economic Research labor studies conference. I highly recommend the talks by Nina Roussille (how wage inequality affects the labor movement, with incredible data from the WGA), Alejandro Estefan (outsourcing policy and workers outcomes in Mexico), and Maggie R Jones (tribal casinos, economic success, and intergenerational mobility) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okN25KgF--o

Next was a great talk by Sudipta Sarangi on games under network uncertainty at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOvNQxMxtQM

Next was an interesting talk by Yulu Tang on leaning benefits and labor market congestion costs in migrant networks using data from a Chinese food delivery platform at the NBER development economics conference https://www.youtube.com/live/UvyXbENHmg8?si=ISC4D3c8i_DUo7_k&t=17509

Last was an intriguing talk by Robert Nowak on characterizing the kinds of functions that neural networks learn at The Institute for Learning-enabled Optimization at Scale (TILOS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiW80uDho4E
