#AcademicRunPlaylist - 7/18/24

A selfie of me in front of a small grass field next to a thick forest on a sunny day. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing glasses with a top steel rim and a light grey shirt

It was an absolutely gorgeous day to be outside, which I enjoyed while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was the second day of the National Bureau of Economic Research conference on income and wealth. I highly recommend the whole day, and I particularly liked the talks by Claire Lelarge (productivity/organizational implications of the minimum wage in France), Claudia Macaluso (job dynamics with staffed labor), and Emek Basker (tip reporting at US restaurants) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgqmAX0EEsA

Last was a great conversation with Ulrich Paul Wohak on using NLP to help define relevant markets for competition authorities at CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics. In addition to the efficacy of the method, I liked how Wohak advocated for using tools like this in combination with enforcers' existing toolbox and deep contextual knowledge, rather than as a replacement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBHd1So_yLI
