#AcademicRunPlaylist - 7/15/24

A selfie of me in front of a large field followed by forest, with a light rainbow visible above the trees against a cloudy sky

It was another extremely hot and muggy day, but I was rewarded with a rainbow after a brief downpour and somehow I made great time on a decent run while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an informative talk by Victoria Chick and Engelbert Stockhammer with an introduction to post-Keynesianism economics at the Cambridge Society for Economic Pluralism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWZk1PVaBU0

Next was an excellent talk by Gerd Gigerenzer on why heuristics are sometimes superior to more information rich prediction approaches at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ1qePz1384&t=3s

Next was a nice pair of talks at the National Bureau of Economic Research micro data and macro models symposium by Simon Mongey (pricing inequality) and Joachim Hubmer (scalable vs. productive technologies) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLnrGYdsF9Y

Next was an engaging talk by David Wang'ombe on family business management and succession planning at Strathmore University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-OybBf4tvI

Last was the first day of the NBER symposium on research in income and wealth. I particularly liked the talks by Brian Quistorff (using payroll data to improve economic statistic timeliness), Aaron Flaaen (structure of global value chains from the US perspective using firm-level data), John Sabelhaus (firm financing, ownership, and performance), Nathan Goldschlag (trends in high-growth US firms), Michael Giandrea (productivity dispersion and structural change in retail trade), Henry Hyatt (trends in US business establishments), and Javier Miranda (declining business dynamism in Europe) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSiR5K43yfs
