#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/8/24

A selfie of me in front of the Boston skyline on a sunny day

It was a great day to be downtown, and while enjoying the city I was also able to enjoy some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a compelling panel on the challenges that data protection laws present for public archives at CPDP Conferences with Michael Friedewald, Alexander Kashumov, Lise Jaillant, and Luisa Palla https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J27TpDoEOGQ

Next was an informative panel on the state of AI regulation across the globe at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University with Elisabeth Sylvan (👋), Ridwan Oloyede (Africa), Carlos Affonso Souza (Brazil), Mason Kortz (US), and Gabriele Mazzini (EU). I particularly liked Kortz's take on how to appropriately regulate AI by focusing on better resourcing enforcers except in a few targeted areas (e.g. copyright) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7NQ-5oYYl4

Next was a slate of talks at CPDP by Francesco Paolo Levantino (emotion recognition in security actions), Johan van Banning (governance of AI-processed evidence), Alexandra Karaiskou (contesting algorithmic decision-making), and Naomi Theinert (big data policing oversight) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znl-9Abgtvc

Next was a fascinating panel on the historical origins of individualism at the Columbia Center on Capitalism and Society with Christine Helmer, Mark Taylor, and Alan Mittleman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OMXrrGkLCA

Next was a great panel on personal data in the AI age at CPDP with Frederick Richter, Mireille Hildebrandt, Clarisse Girot, and Patrick Breyer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xxt6-c1vQ0

Next was an interesting talk by Timothy Loughran on text analysis in finance at Columbia Business School. This is from 8 years ago but it's instructive to understand the relationship between textual features and economic outcomes, even with simple methods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wc6_sy_iVo

Last was an excellent panel on creating open data commons fit for today's tech and privacy landscape at CPDP with Renata Avila, Yaniv Benhamou, Ramya Chandrasekaran, and Melanie Dulong de Rosnay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtdGw9nMPDg
