#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/7/24

A pond perfectly reflecting the blue sky, dotted with white clouds, amidst a thick, green forest

I had a busy day shuttling around Greater Boston, but I was still able to get outside for a bit and listen to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting panel on the role of NGOs and academics in AI governance at CPDP Conferences with Oana Goga, Matthias Spielkamp, and Sven Schade. I particularly liked Goga's points around how academics can engage with policymakers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yu2BMa0jqs

Next was a great pair of talks by Betsey Stevenson (changes in career prospects for women and remaining barriers) and Carmen Reinhart (women and finance) and the Columbia Center on Capitalism and Society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=METKquTka6g

Next was a nice panel on interoperability of AI regulations at CPDP with Elora Fernandes, Alessandro Mantelero, Laura Lázaro Cabrera, and Maria Paz Canales https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6djmPH4zkUE

Next was an engaging symposium on legal considerations in AI training and deployment at Brussels Privacy Hub with Hielke Hijmans, Erevan Malroux, and Pablo Trigo Kramcsák https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hssdOnYFZOQ

Next was an excellent panel on AI regulation and industrial policy in Latin America at CDPR with Nicolo Zingales, Luz Helena Orozco y Villa, Beatriz Kira, Beatriz Botero Arcila, and Pablo Trigo Kramcsák (second appearance today!). These were refreshing perspectives on AI governance approaches, with good context of what technology development means for the future growth of Latin America - the percent of Colombians working in software development was particularly staggering. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTznRNxOrJw

Next was the monthly rundown of the BLS May jobs report by Camelia Kuhnen at the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. The US economy continues to be historically strong, and investors who want the Fed to cut interest rates in the coming months have to be pleased with these numbers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLpbwIKFYFk

Next was a slate of talks at CPDP by Fife Ogunde Ph.D (Canadian view on AI and employment law), Pablo Marcello Baquero (survey results on privacy enforcement transparency across the EU), Claudia Diaz (privacy protection analysis of a network traffic obfuscation protocol), and Alexandre Debant (vulnerabilities and fixes for the French e-voting protocol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbOi37MmSGI

Next was a short talk by Raquel Fernández on the role of culture in gender inequality at the Columbia Center on Capitalism and Society https://youtu.be/9JaBKeNWGpA?si=Y6x8d7Px9dKQirQh&t=1166

Last was a wide-ranging panel on the EU's digital regulatory framework (the Data Act, the Data Governance Act, the Digital Services Act, the Digital Markets Act, and the AI Act) at CPDP with Aaron Martin, Aaron Cooper, Rosa Barcelo, Valda Beizitere, Gloria González Fuster, and Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CYSxZX2iT8
