#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/3/24

A selfie of me in front of a vast swampy expanse on a sunny day.

I had to take my car to the shop, but that just meant lots of time to go on a good run with talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a great panel on ensuring fairness and reduced discrimination in algorithmic hiring at the CPDP Conferences with Angela Müller, Roger Andre Søraa, Asia J. Biega, Milla Vidina, and Frederik Zuiderveen Borgesius https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GB28eXo4aw

Next was the 2023 We Robot Conference at Boston University School of Law. I highly recommend the whole event, and I particularly liked the session on scale in robotics and AI law (Woodrow Hartzog and Kathleen Creel) and the session on the EU's AI act (Margot Kaminski, Beatriz Botero Arcila, Claire Boine, and David Rolnick)

Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auyuyU0opoQ

Next was an excellent panel on AI system failures and repairing the future with public values at CPDP with Iris Muis, Mirko Tobias Schäfer, Minna Ruckenstein, Anni Ojajärvi, and Diletta Huyskes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnK-TUakAsk

Next was an informative conversation with William Clayton on private-funds regulation in the US on the Business Scholarship Podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX3uGHTghQM

Next was a thought-provoking panel on the complex relationship between AI and privacy at CPDP with Michael Lognoul, Gianclaudio Malgieri, Isabelle Vereecken, Jessica Eynard, Lorelien Hoet, and Prof Sandra Wachter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CdV8nWkNdQ

Next was an interesting talk by Nancy Cook on interactive team cognition with algorithmic tools at the College of Information Studies (INFO), University of Maryland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKdOFUcHfpk

Next was a packed panel on the overlapping roles and authorities in the new EU data protection framework at CPDP with Rocco Saverino, Maria Magierska, Brendan Van Alsenoy, Giulia Gentile, and Miguel Valle del Olmo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TW5KqDMv2I

Last was an incredible discussion with Sasha Luccioni on the climate impacts of large models on the TWIML podcast. Luccioni hits a ton of different topics, including energy consumption, energy star ratings for models, and issues of market concentration, among other topics. My top quote: "Evaluation in AI has become so broken." Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoaO4eUPYtY
