#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/26/24
I can't believe I thought it was hot earlier this week, because running today was pretty brutal. But I was still able to do a decent loop thanks to Dunkin Coolattas and talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was a great talk by Anwar Shaikh on theoretical and empirical alternatives to neoclassical and post-Keynesian economics at the Cambridge Society for Economic Pluralism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwKoFoSL9J4
Next was an electric symposium on migration restrictions and damages to the US economy at the Peterson Institute for International Economics with Michael Clemens (eviscerating unscientific claims about immigration), Warwick McKibbin AO (forecasting Trump's immigration policies negative effect on US employment and the economy), and Jonathan Portes (immigration, Brexit, and the UK labor market). Clemens delivers heavy hit after heavy hit on the positive effects of immigration over the medium to long term, and I learned a ton from Portes' talk about the counterintuitive rapid rise of immigration post-Brexit. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POkaKa0fe3A
Next was an engaging panel on building startups in Africa at the Africa Tech Summit London with Chika "CN" Nwobi, Mike Quinn, Uzoma Dozie, and Jessica Hope. Quote of the panel from Nwobi: "I had tremendous respect for VCs because when somebody has money and you want it you just think that money and wisdom are together. Now I know that they're not." 🔥 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hE3YORujlw
Next was an interesting panel on institutionalizing gender transformative AI governance in Africa's judiciary at the Lawyers Hub with Rose Wachuka Macharia, Christine Mutimura-Wekesa, Angela Minayo, and Sylvester Ablorh. Wachuka delivers some particularly excellent points on the challenges with governing amorphous AI systems in settings where fairness and transparency matter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTn9dfXtytU
Next was an incredible talk by Josh Cohen on the types and limits of fairness in AI at the Institute for Ethics in AI. This is one of the best talks I've ever listened to (which longtime watchers know is well over 4K talks at this point), and Cohen articulates points that I've intuitively felt for awhile far more clearly than I could hope. This is essential listening. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSiIv0sISDE
Next was an informative discussion with Charles Kenny on rethinking how we measure extreme poverty on the VoxDev podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJJnPUpKpGc
Last was a thought-provoking talk by Veena Dubal on the myth and measurement of wages in platform work at the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxvc-KQR2vU
