#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/25/24

An old brick mill with an iron roof next to a river on a sunny day

I had a great day volunteering at My Brother's Table in Lynn today (not pictured) - they provide free meals on site to folks in need and are a fantastic organization - if you're able consider volunteering or donating here: https://mybrotherstable.org/

Also! The long, traffic-filled drive to Lynn meant I had tons of time to listen to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a great talk by Peter de Jonge on emotions and well-being, or "how nuts are the Dutch?" at Tilburg University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUqhMrssTJg

Next was an excellent talk by Jonathan Michie on how to fix the economy and economics at the Cambridge Society for Economic Pluralism (CSEP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyVjGJ5FbC0

Next was an informative talk by Peter Andre on the results of a global survey of economists on their opinions of economics at CSEP https://youtube.com/watch?v=VGe8e7H15d0

Next was an important panel on the ethics of CRISPR technology and its potential uses in clinical/research practices at the CU Center for Bioethics and Humanities with Christopher McKinney, Curtis Coughlin, and Lindsay Brubaker. The level of thought, process, and institutional/disciplinary rigor put into the development and deployment of this technology is impressive, and should be studied and emulated in other fields (AI anyone?). Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DmeRKs3t_c

Next was an intriguing talk by Gareth Austin on economic theories and Africa's economic history at CSEP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9ZNfKjaRbE

Next was an interesting panel on funding, growth, and expansion in African startups at the Africa Tech Summit with Laurien Field, Tingting Peng, Victor Alade (FYI he's sometimes called "David" here, but he's definitely Victor!), Nina Triantis, Frances Tyner, and Adewale Yusuf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoxhpVWdzVA

Next was a compelling conversation with Kish Parella on strategies for holding companies accountable for bad behavior, stakeholder approaches to corporate governance, and the intersection between business and law on the Stakeholder Podcast https://stakeholdermedia.libsyn.com/kish-parella

Last was an insightful symposium on Ukraine and Russia's war economies at CEPR with Yuriy Gorodnichenko, Polina Ivanova, Elina Ribakova, and Christoph Trebesch. While I think these folks give far too much credence to the official Russian economic numbers, this is the most in-depth discussion I've heard on this topic yet. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_KpaiUTnRM
