#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/20/24

The stone foundation of an old building in a forest on a sunny day

I was pretty slammed today, but I was still able to fit in some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an excellent talk by Josh McDermott on developing models of human hearing using machine learning at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-QbAm-mFX0

Next was a fantastic talk by Jenny Corbett on to what degree Japanese companies are hoarding too much cash at Tokyo College. This is the most rigorous analysis I've seen of this question, and is an essential talk if you're in corporate governance or finance in Japan or elsewhere. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpkhjdvPYx4

Next was a compelling talk by Andrew Saxe on principles of learning in distributed neural networks at the Simons Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Sn5uyMRrKI

Next was a nice talk by Orit Shaer on tangible and embodied interaction for group work at UCL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdf36VarCHo

Next was a great talk by Dan Sanes on auditory social learning in gerbils (!) at the Simons Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FmHYUfSk3E

Next was an interesting talk by Mutsumi Imai on the relationship between language, culture, and thought at Tokyo College. Imai reviews similarities and differences in language classification of phenomena, exploring how this interacts with culture, perception, and cognition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_RjSW0hNl0

Next was a fascinating talk by Thomas Morgan on which evolutionary pressures likely lead to higher cognition at the Simons Institute. After motivating the work with insight from the animal kingdom, Morgan simulates different environment and creature regimes to investigate what factors might cause the patterns we see in the natural world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG536EoAhgI

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Ernest Liu on the network structure of industries and its relation to industrial policy effectiveness at the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy & Finance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfPTdjYJR8U

Last was an intriguing talk by Pulkit Agrawal on pathways to robotic intelligence at the Simons Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4MMi8q1IRQ
