#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/12/24
The Celtics almost gave me a heart attack, but a win's a win! Earlier I was also able to go on a decidedly more relaxing short run while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an excellent talk by Ethan Kross on the emotional regulating effects of self talk at the University Of Michigan Department Of Psychology. Kross presents a number of compelling studies demonstrating these effects as well as some approaches for applying this technique in everyday life. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KifLQWvKXZA
Next was a great discussion with Samina Karim on organizational design and innovation on the Stakeholder Podcast https://stakeholdermedia.libsyn.com/samina-karim
Next was an important panel on alternative labor organizing for the modern economy at the New York University School of Law with Mariah Montgomery, Jennifer Gordon, Renee Gerni, and Jess Kutch. Even though this panel is from 8 years ago, it's still incredibly relevant. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXkvjCUQEPA
Next was a fascinating talk by Thomas Mills on the UK-US conflict in the electrification of the Central Brazilian Railway project during WW2 at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study. The tight coupling of government and corporate interests, the UK and US government collusion to inhibit Brazilian growth, and the meteoric rise of the US's influence in Latin America (and the concurrent drop in the UK's), it's an extremely instructive history. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYGhFUpnkWo
Next was an engrossing talk by Lin Foxhall on Ancient Greek textile production, with a focus on the gendered nature of production, at Brown University. Also it kicks off with some incendiary Ancient Greek economic historian BEEF! Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AAIljnCe-Y
Next was an intriguing talk by Susanne Schennach on learning from errors in econometrics at the Royal Economic Society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVDZ4ujXXQY
Next was an interesting talk by William N. Goetzmann on the role of the media in influencing investor sentiment and crash beliefs from investor surveys at Columbia Business School https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y21XLRkprQ
Next was a prescient talk by Eve Darian-Smith on law in a postnational world at the QMUL School of Law. It's genuinely shocking that this talk is from 8 years ago, which illustrates just how little progress we've made in the issues identified here (e.g. climate refugees, rise of fascism) in the intervening years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B57ZKhXdTqk
Last was a thought-provoking talk by Omar A Guerrero on the network composition of aggregate unemployment at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl8C5MzMmvE
