#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/10/24

A selfie of me in front of a projection of a title slide that says: "What is AI?" followed by my name written below

I had a great time teaching about AI for MIT Sloan Executive Education (don't worry folks, I had a slide with the Picard facepalm when discussing LLMs), and I was still able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an engaging panel on the role of fundamental rights in regulating AI at the CPDP Conferences with Marco Bassini, Simona Demková, Michèle Finck, and Andreea Serban https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q2f9eDkMrI

Next was an interesting talk by Barry Brown on designing movement in interaction (think partially self-driving cars, robotic trash cans) at UCL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPKXwqbx4bo

Next was an excellent panel on criticisms and fixes for the Data Privacy Framework at CPDP with Theodore Christakis, Laura Drechsler, Nora Ni Loideain, and Peter Swire. The conversation here offered lots of clarity on the choices before the CJEU around the latest Schrems case on data transfers to the US, the singling out of the US compared to other countries (understandable but demonstrably unfair from a rule of law perspective), and how the US's legal system constrains what can be done to address the most stringent data privacy demands from critics. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YYJR1e9coM

Last was a compelling slate of talks on economic progress and the working class in the US at Columbia's Center for Capitalism and Society with Saskia Sassen (increasing income concentration), Alan Krueger (declining workforce participation), Malcolm Wiener (long term changes in productivity), Simon Head (obstructions to flourishing), David Weil (the fissured workplace), and Kathy Cramer (rural Wisconsin views of the economy and politics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUCixKr-PZo
