#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/9/25

A selfie of me on a grassy path through a meadow with forest beyond. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing black sunglasses and a dark blue running shirt.

It was a nice and cool day in Boston, and while warming up a bit on a run I listened to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting panel on the arc of EU privacy and data protection law with Franziska Boehme, Axel Freiherr von dem Bussche, Eleni Kosta, and Wojciech Wiewiorowski at Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUqOUj--YXA

Next was a great talk by Vijay Kumar on autonomous micro aerial vehicles at the Maryland Robotics Center (MRC) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30x_f0MMojQ

Next was an excellent panel on how data protection principles apply to AI systems with friends of the playlist Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna and Valentina Pavel, Diarmuid Goulding, Helena Koning, and Irene Kamara at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE436sbj7uM

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Stephanie Gil on resilient coordination and learning in multi-robot teams at MRC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SKaHMrWd5U

Next was a compelling panel on patterns in EU digital regulation with Karolina Mojzesowicz, Anu Talus, Matthias Spielkamp (who has some spicy takes on the AI act), Maximilian von Grafenstein, and Charles-Albert (Charly) Helleputte at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWY5SdZWblc

Next was a fascinating talk by Nirupam Roy on enabling ubiquitous sensing systems at MRC. There's impressive work here combining acoustic sensing and metamaterials for localization. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul3TWNgWeFs

Next was a fantastic panel on applying the GDPR right to rectification to AI use cases with Gloria González Fuster, Kleanthi Sardeli, Stephanie Rossello, and Anouk Focquet at CPDP. This discussion dives into issues around LLM errors, potential tradeoffs between cost to correct errors and fundamental rights, and much more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C4Up3WF7-o

Next was a nice talk by Ruohan Gao on multisensory object modeling for robotic manipulation at MRC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhFtXczI2S4

Next was an engaging panel on the likely effects of common EU data spaces with Paola Cardozo Solano, Johan Keetelaar, Anna Colom, and Alberto Di Felice at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKxj_srTBiY

Next was an intriguing talk by Luke Zettlemoyer on mixed-modal language modeling at the Kempner Institute at Harvard University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTI4cziw84Q

Last was an informative panel on global perspectives on regulating research using genetic data with Paul Quinn, Ruoxin Su, Johanna Rahnasto, and Róisín Á Costello at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_58oBfs9B8
