#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/8/25

Two swans and three cygnets swimming on a quiet part of the Charles river, with forest on the far bank and a few electrical lines spanning the water. It's a bright but grey day.

The cygnets have made an appearance! While being distracted by the local wildlife I was also able to listen to a talk and a book for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a great panel on how risk framing in EU law and policy can negatively impact fundamental rights with Katherine Nolan, Irmak Erdoğan, Aljosa Ajanovic Andelic, and Isabel Barberá at Computers, Privacy and Data Protection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs-TrDYSljM

Last was "Change" by Damon Centola. Damon is one of the biggest names in the game of diffusion, and this is probably the best summary of the research in that area. This book reviews a lot of the fundamental research in networks, diffusion, and adoption, then gets about the business of systematically debunking the idea of "influencers" as a big driver of adoption of anything beyond simple ideas/products. Instead, Damon demonstrates how complex contagion is best served by cohesive networks, with a number of takeaways for practitioners.
