#AcademicRunPlaylist - 6/10/25

A calm bend in the Charles River on a cloudy and hazy day, with a brush-filled peninsula jutting into the water with forest on the far bank.

I spent a lot of time driving between meetings, and while it wasn't the nicest weather outside at least I was entertained by talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an important panel on bias, discrimination, and data protection in large models with Bart van der Sloot, Raphaële Xenidis, Monica Senor, and Stefaan Verhulst at Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOKbYvYt2BA

Next was a short talk by Veronica Chelu on modeling neural system excitatory-inhibitory dynamics at the Kempner Institute at Harvard University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnKmVObJJUQ

Next was a great panel on empirical methods for fairer AI with Marie Beth van Egmond, Brent Mittelstadt, Carlos Mougan, and Ylja Remmits at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsGc8OeIzmI

Next was an interesting talk by Mark Andermann on offline cortical reactivations of recent experiences at Kempner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N6i7Zi9kXs

Next was an amazing panel on conflicting trends in AI governance with Shazeda Ahmed (who absolutely eviscerates AI doomerism and "safety"), Gerald Hopster, Roel Dobbe, and Iverna McGowan at CPDP. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mHw_mRv2eI

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Jack Halberstam on the intersection of gender and economics and art that explores trans embodiment at CRASSH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpLikix9_ak

Next was an informative panel on AI governance in Africa with Tami Koroye, Karine Caunes, Yomi Ajibade, Melody Musoni, and Mercy King'ori at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3nPAXqM_l0

Next was a pair of talks by Madeleine Steeds (queer joy as a digital good) and Rebecca Swift (visual depictions of genders over time) at the Oxford Internet Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc94pKzPcdM

Next was a slate of talks by Nicola Leschke (transitioning from GDPR to the Data Act), Dave Michels (conflict between US gov't access and GDPR), Thiago Moraes (implementing privacy/data protection by design), and Emmanouil Bougiakiotis (alternatives to GDPR) at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alATkMYXqyE

Next was an incredible but depressing talk by Robert Falkner on the rise of economic nationalism and possible global order futures at the LSE. Falkner analyzes the present with a clear eye, dissecting the underlying causes of our current moment and the poor prospects for a return to multilateralism and all that that implies. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOxjMWblt-A

Next was an engaging panel on AI Act implementation with Angela Müller, Arnika Zinke, Katja Mayer, and Rob Heyman at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u38Wh7tZyzU

Next was a thought-provoking panel on international trade law and global data governance with Neha Mishra, Oscar Borgogno, and Cristina Poncibo at the GW Competition & Innovation Lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wJQ96poQ_g

Last was a compelling panel on grounding AI governance in the rule of law and fundamental rights with Kai Zenner, Seda Gürses, Maria Luisa Stasi, and Maria Donde at CPDP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccx7GCfHcIE
