#AcademicRunPlaylist - 5/9/24
It was a packed day for me, but I was still able to fit in a bunch of talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an interesting talk by David Gissen on the architecture of disability at the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub). Architecture has engaged with accessibility well before HCI, and the insight Gissen brings here is widely applicable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uV0hxeChgY
Next was a whole slate of talks at ACM CHI Conference #CHI2024:
Dipto Das - Audit of Bengali Sentiment Analysis Tools (highly recommend) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OagUATCFWqE
Takanori Komatsu - Waiting Time Perception of Count-downs/ups https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x0TTB-gNVc
Vedant Das Swain - Sensible and Sensitive AI for Worker Wellbeing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JHc4V_mxNw&t=1s
Cathy (Mengying) Fang - Real-time prompting of interactive worlds using LLMs (highly recommend) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YdYkgNNpE8
Sandy Gould - Critique of Workplace Surveillance Technologies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBz5NYacQKs
Jeesun Oh - Building Proactive Voice Assistants that Respect User Agency https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAo3gx4F1Lg
Next was an engaging panel on local disability innovation and production ecosystem building in Nepal at the GDI Hub with Ben Oldfrey, Amit Ratna Bajracharya, Ganga Gurung, and Pratisthit Lal Shrestha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-4Q2r4sT1o
Next was a thought-provoking talk by Jonas CL Valente and Rafael Grohmann on going beyond data colonialism in critical data studies with Latin America at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iseQy4uAh9c
Next was an amazing conversation between Catherine Holloway and Anna Landre on disability dongles at the GDI Hub. This discussion hits on so many topics, from the misplaced fascination of non-disabled engineers with exoskeletons to companies solving "problems" like the fact that white canes haven't changed in over 100 years, all centered around the idea that engaging with the disabled community to understand what they need and work with them to build solutions. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2yXBnf8gmM
Next was a nice panel on new technological avenues for disability inclusion at the GDI Hub with Catherine Holloway, Youngjun Cho, Richard Cave, and Brian Mwenda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3QX8vkGnbo
Last was a great panel on the evolution of inclusive design in London at the GDI Hub with Iain McKinnon and Mikaela Patrick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfypJO2Z7fY
