#AcademicRunPlaylist - 5/27/24
It was another nice day in Boston until the late afternoon, and throughout the day I was able to listen to some nice talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an interesting talk by Rashesh Shrestha on the effect of political connections on labor market outcomes in Indonesia at the Crawford School of Public Policy
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GywQrAWPbuw
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3V_ivEhUi0
Next was an excellent talk by Aldon Morris on why WEB Du Bois is the founder of American scientific sociology at the LSE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBM6aKvxXU8
Next was an engaging conversation with Jolande Fooken on the neuroscience of coordinating action and perception on the Brain Inspired podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEFLgjM6yGA
Next was a good discussion with Christopher Manning on late-breaking NLP and LLM research on the TWIML podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIZwxufxg28
Next was a fantastic talk by William Barnett on where great companies and leaders come from at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Barnett identifies cultivating variance in outcomes where possible rather than solely the consensus "right" thing to do, since luck is such an important part of abnormally positive outcomes. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUAuTcdmaAc
Next was an important talk by Charles Weijer on the ethics of neuroimaging after severe brain injury at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. Weijer details the evolving state of severe brain injury treatment and research and the role of fMRI in understanding patient condition, with all of the challenges of communicating precisely what imaging can and can't reveal, whether it changes medical care decisions, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5p9Z0-yIko
Next was a fascinating talk by Richard Burger on tracing early cinnabar trade networks in the ancient Andes using mercury isotopes (!) at Brown University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLN_sNoVM5k
Last was a thought-provoking talk by Shane Dikolli on leading executive behavioral indicators of organizational outcomes at the University of Melbourne https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=986QFtRULL0
