#AcademicRunPlaylist - 5/25/24

A number of green, leafy trees seen from below against a clear sky in the fading light of the late afternoon

Lots of shuttling around today, but at least I was accompanied by talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an important talk by Kris Manjapra on labor and the global plantation complex in the 19th century at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tW040IzLRY

Next was an eye-opening symposium on the ethical involvement of patients in the FDA regulatory evaluation of new products at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics with talk by Aaron S. Kesselheim (FDA approval process and recent cases), Walid Gellad (flibanserin and patients), and Diana Zuckerman (the role of the public in FDA approval decisions). The examination of challenges of engaging with stakeholders in a public setting and accounting for qualitative evidence while attempting to explain statistical reasoning to a lay audience was insightful, and applicable in fields well beyond medicine. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-1eNn0gJu8

Next was an interesting talk by Geoffrey Bell on the Irish Revolution and the British labor movement at the University of London School of Advanced Study https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gGPn4worJM

Next was a great talk by Philipp Kircher on the economics of matching at the Royal Economic Society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYWg4fbE69M
