#AcademicRunPlaylist - 5/21/24

A male turkey under a small pine tree next to a meadow on a sunny day

Like me this turkey tried to stay in the shade on a hot day, but at least I got to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an excellent panel on the role of education and skill building in individual and societal economic outcomes at the Royal Economic Society with Simon Burgess, C. Kirabo Jackson, Sandra McNally, and Steve Machin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe-aBOiX0sk

Next was a great talk by Zhi Da on using the wisdom of crowds to forecast corporate earnings at Columbia Business School. Da empirically demonstrates some of the herding behaviors that occur on online prediction platforms and how that can lead to higher individual returns but worse aggregate results https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWpunrI84Xo

Next was an important talk by Diamond Ashiagbor on race, slavery, and the historical evolution of the labor contract at the UCL Faculty of Laws. Ashiagbor shows how the law was changed to allow for slavery across the British colonies, and how even abolition didn't remove some of the legal changes that supported the institution of slavery and its descendants. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tN3QiPpAmg

Next was a sweeping talk by Dennis Egger on the economic effects of refugees and immigration at the Department of Economics, University of Oxford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AruGttsD3WQ

Next was a fantastic talk by Alison Gopnik on the role and form of learning in childhood and beyond at the LSE. Gopnik goes into the evolutionary roots of childhood and family structure and how abnormal the human condition is, as well as the unique and vital strategies that children use for learning. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_bviT3-fbQ

Next was an informative talk by Richard Booth on appraisal arbitrage in Delaware and US corporate law at the Cambridge Faculty of Law https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5REc2GfSQ4

Next was an engaging panel on the power of tech companies and their controlling shareholders at CRASSH with Siva Vaidhyanathan, Mireille Hildebrandt, and Ellen P. Goodman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XBMKnq1SrU

Last was an interesting talk by Trevor Robbins on the neuroscientific bases of impulsivity and compulsivity at Brown University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtHOfMNgL3s
