#AcademicRunPlaylist - 5/21/25

A selfie of me in front of a stream cutting through thick forest, leading to a swampy expanse with forest on the far side on a bright but cloudy day. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing a black headband, black sunglasses, and a red, long-sleeved Under Armour running shirt.

It was pretty cold today, but I was able to get out before the temperature dropped too precipitously and listen to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting talk by Homanga Bharadhwaj on using YouTube videos to assist robot learning and planning at the Maryland Robotics Center https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbXUts0F1Ro

Next was a fascinating talk by Taylor Gibson on the Cayuga Nation's annuity history and archival work more generally at Six Nations Polytechnic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sYXR38oIs8

Next was "In the Shadow of Liberty" by Ana Raquel Minian. This book is a harrowing accounting of indefensible immigrant detention stories from across US history. While the focus is on these individuals, Minian includes some information on the larger legal context of the time. The chapter that deals with Haitian immigration was the most compelling for me, widening the aperture to demonstrate how Haitian immigrant detention opened the door to using Guantanamo as a legal purgatory in addition to implications for immigration policy more broadly https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/723672/in-the-shadow-of-liberty-by-ana-raquel-minian/

Last was "Capital Without Borders" by Brooke Harrington. Harrington provides an academic deep dive into the burgeoning field of wealth management, reviewing its historical roots, legal underpinnings, economic effects, and the mechanics of the profession itself. There's some overlap with her more recent book, "Offshore," but this one is more academically-oriented and gives much more historical context and legal minutiae - which I preferred but your mileage will vary. Highly recommend https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674244771
