#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/8/24
It was absolutely gorgeous before the eclipse, and luckily I had some time to go for a run while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was a whirlwind symposium on digital platforms, competition law, and regulation at the Maastricht University Faculty of Law. I highly recommend the whole event (I just wish it was longer since the talks were brief), and I particularly liked the talks by Birgit van Houtert (geo-blocking and jurisdiction in cross-border copyright infringement), Subhashish Gupta (regulating digital platforms and copyright enforcement in India), and Juan David Gutiérrez Rodríguez and Manuel Abarca Meza (Latin American competition law in digital markets) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXn2mpfEBqo
Next was a fascinating talk by Peter Perdue on manufacturing knowledge in Qing China at Brown University. The historical details are incredibly interesting, particularly how the Qing and other Chinese rulers used maps and visualizations to project their desired reality, even when it didn't match with what was actually happening. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD5yHxOPsE
Next was an excellent pair of talks by Rogier Creemers (big tech regulation with Chinese characteristics) and Pim Jansen (balancing green and digital transition policies with competition law and policy in the EU) at Maastricht University. Creemers provides vital perspective on China here, while Jansen delivers a sweeping look at the challenges of balancing competition and industrial policy goals. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC7sjnORb6Y
Next was an intriguing conversation with Peter Hase on localizing and editing data in LLMs on the TWIML podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a1bP4-lOU8
Next was a slate of talks at Maastricht University by Tamta Margvelashvili (justifying online selling restraints with sustainability), Rajeev Sachdev (towards an improved legal framework for trademarks on the internet), and Tania Pantazi (competition issues in online hotel booking platforms) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dletLaqvsng
Next was a great talk by Lianmin Zheng on scalable and efficient systems for LLMs. This is an excellent example of work that takes into account "the bitter lesson," focusing on methods to improve compute utilization and efficiency rather than inscrutable model architecture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIC50Ndxv-8
Last was a nice session on the role of IP and competition law in the green and digital transitions at Maastricht University, with talks by Leanne Wiseman (copyright to facilitate the right to repair), Anselm Kamperman Sanders (IP rights in the circular economy), and Julian Nowag (competition law's sustainability gap) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2frA1F9m8Po
