#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/3/24

A line of daffodils, a few of which have bloomed, in a line next to a brook cutting through a grass field on a slightly cloudy day

It was pretty rainy today (pic is from earlier in the week), but while attempting to stay dry I was still able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

Next was an informative talk by Andrei Shleifer on a retrospective on the modeling failures that caused most organizations to not predict the 2008 financial crisis and arguably bungle the fallout at the Peterson Institute for International Economics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guxzDBpqepo

Next was an intriguing talk by Christian Hilbe on the evolutionary game theory of cooperation, social norms, and modesty at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development https://youtu.be/8zyzfTrUuU4?si=G4fiIOe-2as-icDe&t=169

Next was a nice talk by Giulia Cencetti on temporal network generation at the Women in Network Science (WiNS) seminar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv4_XOX3zqs

Next was a fascinating talk by Lynn McDonald on Florence Nightingale's work and impact on statistical thought and practice at the Royal Statistical Society. The statistical methods she pioneered had an immediate impact in the healthcare space, and the deep dive here is amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5FeUZ18Y2c

Next was an engaging talk by Anette Hosoi on using massive data sets to understand basketball IQ, whether American football stadium openings led to higher rates of COVID during the pandemic, and putting fantasy sports (and real sports) on the skill-luck spectrum (whew) at Northwestern University Materials Science and Engineering Department https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jmsIftTO8g

Next was a great talk by Gordana Marmulla on social influence dynamics and centrality in networks at the WiNS seminar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyZq3PO0k9k

Next was an excellent talk by Xie He on developing a sequential link prediction algorithm for temporal networks at the WiNS seminar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yvIoMg6mAY

Last was a thought-provoking talk by Clara Stegehuis on network motifs at the WiNS seminar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyFXzMjh71U
