#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/27/24

A picture of me with seven Japanese researchers in suits. In the middle is Professor Deguchi, seated in his electric wheelchair, while myself and Dr. Eguchi are crouched on either side of him with the remaining researchers standing behind us. In the background is a checkered Ritsumeikan University background

Well it's been a long trip back to the US, complete with more Air Canada shenanigans, but at least I was able to listen to lots of talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was the packed Oliver Cromwell conference at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. I particularly liked the historical overview of Cromwell's career and research by Michael B Burawoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAlbYM4n7w8

Next was a great panel on the effects of small business and worker support programs during the pandemic with David Autor, Jacob Mortenson, Giulia Giupponi, and Ruth Simon at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School (MRCBG) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcYAC23srjs

Next was an intriguing talk by Dan Awrey on financial network structure, the effects of infrastructure and regulatory changes, and how to improve it moving forward at the MRCBG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnw3jKoUnZk

Next was an informative panel on the historical trajectory of global economic inequality with Karen Dynan, Branko Milanovic, and Edoardo Campanella at the MRCBG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4boFNrfw3A&t=9s

Next was a fantastic talk by Meg Rithmire on the past, present, and future of state/business relations in China at the MRCBG. This is by far the best, most cohesive take on the state of business and regulation in China I've ever heard. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmlRZhpFwsI

Next was an important talk by Laura Morgan Roberts on race, work, and leadership at the MRCBG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0fQgGiQf3E

Next was the MRCBG's public workshop with the DOJ and FTC on their draft merger guidelines. I thought this was even better than the UChicago workshop, and the first panel with Leemore Dafny, Martin Gaynor, Louis Kaplow (bringing the fire - "[market definition] is alchemy, and I believe in never using it"), Dominic Vote, and Aviv Nevo was incredible. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2nLJYfAuzo

Next was an excellent talk by Nancy L. Rose on the role of antitrust in protecting labor markets at the MRCBG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xagANJT4M7A

Next was an interesting talk by Prasad Balkundi on the social ledger of workplace relationships at the SONIC Research Group https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_nt3QFSpCg

Last was a nice talk by Ben Hutchinson on the role of attention in creating and retrieving memories at Northeastern University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFFhIa9Mni8
