#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/22/24

A selfie of me smiling with my left fist in the air on a black sand beach in front of the ocean on a cloudy day

A personal best by a decent margin for me today, clearing 46.8 mi/75 km at a good pace! Starting in Shibuya I worked my way past Yokohama and ended close to Odawara, finishing on the Pacific coast with a beach all to myself! And my longest run ever of course meant lots of talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an intriguing talk by Ralph Hertwig on when simple decision heuristics yield better performance at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_LSh1YbTSs

Next was a rapid-fire panel on different regional AI regulatory approaches at the Stanford Law School with Florence G'SELL (Europe), Jerrold Soh (Asia), and Danny Tobey (US) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu5XnoMBdG0&t=2s

Next was an interesting talk by Alfie Abdul-Rahman on creating useful visual analytics tools at UCL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoDU7KkZj2M

Next was an important talk by Howard Jean-Denis on inclusive management practices from Haiti at the Academy of Management. Jean-Denis discusses the Haitian concept of "Lakou," how it's situated within Haitian history, and the implications of a more expansive view of management and entrepreneurship that it and related indigenous philosophies can foster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAVGg0hOMIc

Next was a nice talk by Ariel Burstein on a theoretical model of job tradability and the labor market impact of immigration at the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy & Finance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybfOZECKFeE

Next was a great talk by Samuel Scarpino with a pre-pandemic talk on effects of networks on contagion at Northeastern University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2T_6H_T8j8&t=18s

Next was an incredible talk by Ben Dantzer on the effects of stress on a variety of life outcomes at the University Of Michigan Department Of Psychology. Starting with a profoundly personal experience of stress and birth, Dantzer moves to fascinating animal research involving red squirrels, meerkats, doping peanut butter with cortisol, analyzing freezers full of wild animal fecal samples, and more - all to reveal the surprising benefits and effects of stress for evolutionary fitness. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKI5deWimhg

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Saurabh Gupta on robot learning by understanding egocentric videos at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WznUQvDQEw

Next was a spicy talk by Luigi Zingales on European integration, politics, and economics at Brown University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ3TJQvQz-Q

Next was an informative panel on India's draft digital competition bill at the Digital Markets Research Hub with Vikas Kathuria, Manjushree RM, and Gokul Plaha. This is easily the most comprehensive discussion I've heard on this bill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7olK85Kqpmw

Last was an engaging panel on how entrepreneurs are adding social and economic value across Africa at Brown with Tunde Alawode, Tayo Rockson, David Bakuli, Emmanuel Nyame, Daniel K. Darko, and Damilola Junaid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QxGbVYWWC4
