#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/21/24

A photo of me sitting on a bench with my pant legs rolled up with my feet in the water at a public foot bath. I’m a bald, middle-aged white man with a red beard flecked with white wearing thin, metal-rimmed glasses, a thinly-striped brown dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and dark blue pants

Thanks to Satoshi Nagano and Ritsumeikan University I had a great time visiting with leaders of a wide range of essential institutions in Niigata prefecture, complete with a few minutes relaxing at the public foot bath outside the Echigo Yuzawa train station! I was also able to spend some time on the train listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting talk by Tim Plesak on using risk-reward structures to understand the uncertainty heuristics that people use at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs_BS6EeAG0

Next was an intriguing talk by Dhruv Shah on building large neural models for robot behavior at the Maryland Robotics Center https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeGUG2d6-Wc

Next was a great talk by Elena Shrestha on multimodal perception and reinforcement learning for real world robot guidance and control at the Maryland Robotics Center https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orte6Uv_mGU

Last was a fantastic talk by Aaron Clauset on researcher productivity and data-driven predictions in the science of science at Northeastern University. I can’t hear about this research enough, and if you haven’t heard Clauset speak about researcher productivity before you owe it to yourself to listen to this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYQcZgkjgTM
