#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/29/25

A swan on the Charles River on a clear, sunny day. A new wooden boardwalk is on the left, while a number of cars are driving parallel to the far bank, with trees beyond.

It heated up even more today, and while I didn't join this swan in the Charles I did avail myself of artificial indoor cooling while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an engaging discussion with Teodora Groza and Simon de Ridder on their competition law research at the Digital Markets Research Hub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNCWRdkfCuo

Next was an informative talk by Simon Deakin on legal protections for platform workers in different countries at the Digital Futures at Work Research Centre (Digit), with excellent commentary from Tim Sharp and Aida Ponce Del Castillo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEX5d0sK-pI

Next was a great talk by Clive Lennox on the causes and effects of re-audits at Mohamed Elsalkh's research seminar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c8gadquczM

Last was "The Arabs: A History" by Eugene Rogan. Starting at the height of the Ottoman Empire and continuing to modern times, this is an in-depth, compelling history of the Arab world, detailing the changing contours of power, ideology, and identity over ~500 years. While much of the focus is on the relationships and motivations of players within the region, interactions with Europe, the US, and Zionists are also examined here. This book gives good context for the current regional landscape and what other paths might have been taken in recent decades. Highly recommend https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/eugene-rogan/the-arabs/9780465032488/
