#AcademicRunPlaylist - 4/16/25

The Boston skyline seen from the rocky peak of a small mountain, with vast forest stretching out to the horizon, on a clear, sunny day.

On a day where I'm glad to have an affiliation with Harvard, I was also able to reflect in the cooler weather while listening to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an important talk by Michael Posner on the evolution of the business and human rights field at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIQnRVJ9XeY

Last was "The World of Sugar" by Ulbe Bosma. This book covers a lot of ground, starting with the first hints of small scale sugar production and following its growth to one of the world's dominant commodities. That growth came at a huge cost, and Bosma details the plantation system and related colonization and slavery activities that supported its growth. Also interesting was the examination of automation during the industrial revolution and more recent developments around consumption. Highly recommend https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674279391
