#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/29/24

A beaver lodge next to the shore on a pond on a sunny day

I found the under construction (or possibly now completed) beaver lodge, and while searching I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a great conversation with Bob Sutton on his new book, The Friction Project, at INSEAD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkzzZ4b2apM

Next was a fantastic slate of talks on reforming data protection at the Cambridge Faculty of Law by Winfried Veil (a banger on the shortcomings of GDPR), Bert-Jaap Koops (issues with EU data protection law), and Nadja Purtova (failures of the definition of personal data and possible fixes). Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBpkykCW18k

Next was an engaging discussion with Erin Meyer on how to collaborate and lead across cultures at INSEAD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBilJU9sQKM

Next was a wide-ranging set of talks on enforcement perspectives on improving data protection at Cambridge by Orla Lynskey (transnational GDPR enforcement), Johnny Ryan (historical perspectives and recent compliance orders), Luca Tosoni (national enforcer perspective), and Gloria González Fuster (identifying and quantifying GDPR success metrics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaEbEgopMe4

Last was a compelling group of talks at the National Bureau of Economic Research Chinese Economy Working group meeting, with standout talks by Hanming Fang (Chinese industrial policy and serial entrepreneurship), Jeffry Frieden (a highly recommended tour through globalization 1.0 history - essentially the pre-WWI global economy - and lessons for today), and Jianhuan Xu (the dark side of patent trade) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2U_KvVOLig
