#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/23/24
There are some extremely busy beavers lurking about, and while I didn't catch a glimpse of them I was able to admire their handiwork while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was the amazing National Bureau of Economic Research labor studies program meeting. I highly recommend the whole event, and I particularly suggest the talks by Simon Jäger (labor market tightness and union activity), Emily Nix and Abi Adams (the economic costs of rape), and Parag Mahajan (the impact of immigration on firms and workers using H-1B lottery data) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HptxoX-Rzw
Next was an engaging panel on AI embodied in robots at the GRASP Lab with Pratik Chaudhari, Dinesh Jayaraman, and Michael Posa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3mVrdCZJEI
Next was an excellent pair of talks by Paul Collier and Colin Mayer on the future of the corporation, the economy, and society at the Oxford Martin School. This is a good look at the historical arc of capitalism and the need for fundamental changes to these systems and frameworks to ensure a better future. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3uv4iP1c5U
Next was an interesting symposium on exhaustion (first sale doctrine in the US) of IP rights at the UCL Faculty of Laws with Irene Calboli, William Bowes, Christopher Stothers, and Matthew Cope. This is from 5 years ago, but with the exception of some of the near term Brexit discussion the conversation is still quite informative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l70RBKeVzWI
Next was a great talk by Suresh Naidu on labor unions, worker skills, and inequality at Columbia Business School https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-gACq2prAk
Next was a nice talk by Carlota Perez on capitalism, technology, and innovation at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE1oCzvo0E4
Next was a wide-ranging talk by Andrei Shleifer on the roots of the 2008 financial collapse at the LSE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zId2Vs2ei14&t=7s
Next was an excellent talk by Raghunath Rao on the efficacy of activity-based incentive plans for salespeople at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBoCTrGhTuQ&t=3s
Last was a whirlwind talk by Iain Couzin on principles of collective behavior at the Santa Fe Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rnB0EA9J-4
