#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/1/24
A busy start to March, but I was still able to enjoy some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an interesting symposium on gendered approaches to restitution at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs with talks from María Iñigo Clavo (Indigenous women and textiles in Guatemala), Hande Sarikuzu (sorcery and violence in Brazilian historical records), and Ana Paulina Lee (narratives of forced migration in Turkey's Kurdish population) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vk0J0ij1KU
Next was an excellent talk by Pedro Lopes on integrating interactive devices with the user's body at Stanford University. Why build bulky external devices to simulate resistance when you can just as easily use electrical stimulation? Why rig a huge system to blow cold air at a user when you can use computationally controlled emissions of eucalyptol directly to the nasal cavity? You'll learn about all this and more in this fascinating talk. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND_v82mBta0
Next was a thought-provoking panel on how tech will transform labor markets at Chicago Booth with Randall Kroszner, Chad Syverson, and Julia Lane https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IS-YUNev4Q
Next was the second day of the National Bureau of Economic Research's digital economics and AI meeting with great talks by Amanda Dahlstrand (online versus in-person services in medicine - FYI sound doesn't come on for the first 5 minutes of this talk), Limin Fang (effect of quality disclosure on firm entry and exit dynamics), and Hunt Allcott (theory around harms from digital media mergers/breakups) https://www.youtube.com/live/UPNPZiVjrD4?si=rPgZ-H1A05NWFa-8&t=364
Last was an engaging panel on the 20-year history of basketball analytics at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference with Dean Oliver, Allison Feaster, Mike Zarren, Brittni Donaldson, and Benjamin Alamar. Sports is much farther ahead in people analytics adoption than industry, and this great conversation gives perspective that is useful beyond sports https://www.youtube.com/live/9MFagm5-Jds?si=92PdsxWIqLK5jYQg&t=25278
