#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/11/24
I'm still thrown off by the time change, but I was able to get my wits about me and listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an excellent talk by Thomas DiPrete on to what degree occupation-specific skills affects an individual's labor market outcomes at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. DiPrete's approach, applied on data from the US, Germany, and France, shows that the degree of linkage between the education system and the labor market is one of the biggest predictors here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz_bSc69Lfk
Next was an interesting talk by Maryam Alimardani on quantifying the factors underlying the uncanny valley effect at Tilburg University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GaLj_yAbgc
Next was an engaging conversation with Sayash Kapoor on quantifying the risks of open AI models on the TWIML podcast. I don't love the use of the "foundation model" (tldr; it implies these models are a legitimate foundation and inevitable, obscures from what they actually do, etc.) terminology here, but this is a good, level-headed analysis of some of the risks that open vs. closed models can pose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmypOIq1LV8&t=1s
Next was a great discussion with David Lucas on the surprising effects of weak legislation in mobilizing B-corp certification on Sekou Bermiss, Ph.D.'s Lit Review podcast https://thelitreview.podbean.com/e/the-lit-review-an-amj-podcast-david-lucas-s3e2/
Next was a nice talk by Yu-Ru Lin on using visual analytics to highlight coincidental correlations in AI models at the USC Information Sciences Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uZOOM6-noo
Next was a wide-ranging talk by John Borrows on indigenous law and the role of more-than-human forces as legal participants at Western University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORa0EHiNCD0
Last was a spicy talk by Janet Banfield on improficiency and the professionalization of undisciplined practices at Heidelberg University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHYxQ4Qx4t4
