#AcademicRunPlaylist - 3/26/25

I had a fairly hectic schedule today, but in between meetings/errands I was able to get in some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an excellent conversation between friends of the playlist Ann Lipton and Michael Levin on how companies count their investors and the implications for disclosures, withhold the vote campaigns, and a few comments on the dumpster fire that is the now passed SB 21 on the Shareholder Primacy podcast. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cCJDrAPYvY
Next was an informative talk by Hope Mogale on designing automatic speech recognition systems for African low resource languages at Data Science for Social Impact https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bARYZk4iLuI
Next was a great panel on the past, present, and future of the study of the Indian caste system at CRASSH with Joel Robbins, Joel Lee, Surinder S. Jodhka, and Manali Desai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH6yQBEDwAs
Last was "The Man Who Touched His Own Heart" by Rob Dunn. This book chronicles the fairly bonkers history and science of heart medicine, with solid scientific progress mixed with absolutely crazy individuals who pushed the field forward. What was most interesting to me were the repeated examples of the ethical researchers who advanced the fundamental science to the point of practice while unethical individuals often implemented those advances and claimed all of the progress for themselves. For those who are interested in the history of science, ethics, or health this is a must read.
