#AcademicRunPlaylist - 2/27/24
It was an absolutely gorgeous day in Boston yesterday, and while I was only able to go for a shorter run at least I enjoyed the weather with some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was an intriguing talk by Alexandros Gelastopolous on how ranking based social influence can produce lock-in at the Santa Fe Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-w0zaxksFY
Next was an interesting talk by Julian Nyarko on using NLP to study gaps in commercial contracts at Stanford CodeX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTEC6yreUuY
Next was a great talk by Vellah Kedogo Kigwiru on different regulatory approaches to gig work in Africa and beyond at Central European University. Vellah provides an excellent rundown of the challenges of regulating gig work in emerging markets compared to developed economies, particularly the power imbalance between government and platforms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHR3PpmTNs0
Next was a fascinating talk by Katie Skinner on machine learning for robot perception in challenging environments at the Maryland Robotics Center. This talk has underwater robots exploring shipwrecks and space robots so… yeah, pretty cool stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekSgsTL60iI
Next was a fantastic talk by Don Moore on the prevalence of overconfidence and overprecision at #DataColada. Moore shows these psychological tendencies in a variety of settings, and also describes how different visualization approaches can reduce these biases. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvscL_btKIo
Next was a powerful slate of talks on gendered approaches to restitution at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs with Kate Elizabeth Creasey and Mirjam Paninski (care of wounded things), Cresa Pugh (legacies of gendered bronze casting), and Radhika Moral (migrants, materialities, and mobility in the Brahmaputra Valley) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lSwcUOm-NY
Last was a nice talk by Phanish Puranam on the power of corporate hierarchies and authority and the surprising effectiveness of dumb bosses at the Strategic Management Society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om24oCXQoWQ
