#AcademicRunPlaylist - 2/24/24
I was able to enjoy a brisk Saturday with a short run along with talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
First was a wide-ranging conversation with Matthew Jackson on social and economic networks at the Santa Fe Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH_jQHhWJu8
Next was a whirlwind talk by Yishay Yafeh on regulating conglomerates at the Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State. Yafeh examines the approaches and outcomes in Imperial to postwar Japan and their zaibatsus, Korea's attempts at chaebol regulation, and Israel's conglomerates. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM9JowzhuiI
Next was a great talk by Hui Li on information transparency, multi-homing, and platform competition at the Toulouse School of Economics. Using a natural experiment in Groupon's preparation for their IPO, Li shows how subtle changes in their public listing algorithm significantly impacted LivingSocial and consumers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTp32rTb4K4
Next was a great pair of talks on digital privacy at the New York University School of Law by Yafit Lev Aretz (privacy regulation and innovation policy, with discussion by Rob Seamans) and Meghanath Macha (personalized and interpretable privacy preservation in location tracking) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sbAMBU58ro
Next was a short talk by Andrew Grotto on decision making for cybersecurity breach attribution at Stanford University https://youtu.be/i19OxO0ZzhU?si=SGfdqrsts_Us7Wbn&t=535
Next was an intriguing talk by Tito Boeri on demographic breakdown of workplace COVID exposure risks at the CEPR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo-eLTTwR6A
Next was an engaging discussion with Mariana Mazzucato on new economic policy approaches at the RSA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3MaskBZ4PA
Next was a packed talk by Ilene Grabel on global financial governance in a post-American led economic order at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfSGcY9DbQE
Next was an informative talk by Anne Peters on the rise of due diligence as a structural change of the international legal order at the Cambridge Faculty of Law https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjWg1-2VYd4
Last was an amazing talk by Thomas Philippon on the degradation of America's free markets at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Philippon presents compelling evidence of the negative effects of growing concentration in the US economy, although he suggests that antitrust policy doesn't need to fundamentally change to meet this challenge (I respectfully disagree). Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx7s8YJmIvc
