#AcademicRunPlaylist - 2/14/24

A selfie of me in front of a slightly frozen large pond.

Today was packed for me, but I was still able to fit in some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting talk by Iftekhar Ahmed on thinking about software quality assurance for machine learning and accessibility at the UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-j_wF9S4RA

Next was a great talk by Niamh Dunne on regulatory gaming in the EU at the Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI). Dunne details different classes of regulatory gaming and their effects, along with some fascinating case studies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjqqY-ZTNzc

Next was a nice talk by Alon Orlitsky on robust learning from untrusted sources at UCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyK8UTaB4cY

Next was an engaging conversation with Cristina Caffarra on the DMA and EU competition policy more broadly on Oles Andriychuk's Digital Markets Research Hub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvzpvc9cZqw

Next was an intriguing discussion with Rem Koning on using chatbots to help entrepreneurs in developing countries on the VoxDev podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a3XbsAQ1MM

Next was an informative talk by Saewoong Bahk on co-located protocol aided performance enhancements in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi based IoT networks at UCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xQsANJ7Wx8

Next was a fantastic talk by Mako Hill on the lifecycles of peer-produced knowledge commons at the Princeton Center for Information Technology Policy. Mako examines the evolution of different Wikipedia communities, revealing fascinating growth and decline dynamics and relating them to the openness of the platform. He then goes into why absolute openness often becomes undesirable, but the partial closure has some negative effects. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80KLt-ec6ic

Last was an excellent talk by Mani Srivastava on creating high performance and trustworthy learning-enabled IoT systems at UCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c-I0klDTDo
