#AcademicRunPlaylist 2024 Wrapped!
And some extras for 12/27/24

It was slightly warmer today, which made it that much nicer wandering around in the woods while listening to talks and books for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!
Earlier today I also posted my 2024 #AcademicRunPlaylist Wrapped with the best talks/books of the year! You can peruse it here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/2024-academicrunplaylist-wrapped-ben-waber-ferpe/
First was an interesting talk by Yukang Yan on understanding, predicting, and enhancing behavior in mixed reality at the UMD Human-Computer Interaction Lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSjkN1dWSI8
Next was "Feminist, Queer, Crip" by Alison Kafer, who delivers a no-holds-barred criticism of how disability is portrayed, characterized, and treated by society at large, advocating for an approach that eschews normalization and a variety of tropes to create a more clear-eyed and open society. The writing style fits with recent feminist and disability studies work, which might take some getting used to if you haven't read other papers/books in this area. The work Kafer does to deconstruct a lot of the high-visibility work in this space is impressive and detailed, and many of the cases that are examined are equal parts enlightening and disturbing. Highly recommend https://iupress.org/9780253009340/feminist-queer-crip/
Last was "Academic Ableism" by Jay Dolmage. This is an essential book for anyone in a position of power in academia, reviewing how the sector systematically fails people with disabilities. Moving from traditional academic ideals that stigmatize differences in process and presentation to the bureaucratic nature of modern institutions to the popular portrayal of college life, this book presents a laundry list of critical, continuing actions to create a more just, equitable environment.
