#AcademicRunPlaylist - 2/1/25

A selfie of me in a snow-covered forest, brightly highlighted by the midday sun. I'm a middle-aged white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing a grey winter hat, black sunglasses, and a grey wool coat over a grey zip up sweater.

It was a beautiful but cold day out, and while going out for a lovely jaunt in the woods I was also able to listen to a book for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

Today I listened to "Lakota America" by Pekka Hämäläinen. The Lakota are often only covered in histories of North America once they reach the zenith of their power in the 1800s, but here Hämäläinen traces their influence and story much earlier. Most interesting to me were the pre-1800s chapters which trace their migrations and interactions with other First Nations, European powers, and eventually the United States. While there are no earth-shattering analyses here, this is a rich examination and adds to the important context of North America as it exists today. Highly recommend https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300255256/lakota-america/
