#AcademicRunPlaylist - 12/28/24

A selfie of me on a snowy suburban street on a cloudy day. I'm a middle-aged white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing a grey winter hat, glasses with a metal top rim, and a grey zip up sweater over a black shirt. On my left breast is a blue button that says: YES for Needham!

It's never a bad day to canvass for inclusive housing policy (for those who are interested here's a site on the effort: https://yesforneedham.com/), and while pounding the pavement I was able to listen to an appropriate book for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

Today I listened to "Stamped from the Beginning" by Ibram X. Kendi. I was literally moved to tears by the end of this book. What's so powerful here is the clear throughline that Kendi paints from pre-colonial Europe to the present day, showing the inescapable connections in racist thought and methods between eras. What emerges is a picture of painfully slow, incremental progress, with the finish line still far from sight. Within the book are unflinching analyses and indictments of American ideology, politics, science, business, academia, entertainment, and pretty much any other sector you can name. Highly recommend https://www.ibramxkendi.com/stamped
