#AcademicRunPlaylist - 11/25/25

A selfie of me in front of a painting mounted on a wood panel wall. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing glasses with thick black rims and a maroon and white MIT sweatshirt.

I'm mostly recovered today, so I swapped some books at the library and listened to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a compelling talk by Pedro Lopes on moving from human computer interaction to HC integration at UIST 2025 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1snYMDqpXY

Next was an excellent talk by Dina Machuve on deep learning for chicken disease diagnosis at Deep Learning Indaba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGaMFXJhi34

Next was an intriguing talk by Jacob Andreas on using questions for robotic learning and teaching at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gmCF08W2OU

Next was a pair of talks by Lexy A.L. Andati (radio astronomy imaging) and Geraud Nangue Tasse (continuous reinforcement learning) at Deep Learning Indaba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZrT4OtEbSw

Next was an interesting talk by Jiaoyang Li on coordinating robot fleets at the CMU Robotics Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1_q8Eo34rU

Next was an amazing talk by Sanmi Koyejo on meaningfully, reliably, and responsibly measuring AI systems at Deep Learning Indaba. Koyejo is always a must-listen, and he again delivers here by deconstructing the current state of benchmarking and "performance" in AI, proposing some promising improvements as well. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXYvsDJS9vw

Last was an engaging panel on the latest developments around US labor at Power At Work with Seth Harris, Kim Kelly, Mark Gevaart, and Ruben J. Garcia. I was finally able to join this live, so if you stick around you'll hear a question from yours truly! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnm7rVbUytI
