#AcademicRunPlaylist - 11/17/24

My medium-sized black dog sleeping, with his eyes tucked under a blue pillow

My younger dog certainly had the right idea today, but while he was taking naps I was busy running various time-critical errands and listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was an interesting talk by Philip Dames on developing situational awareness in autonomous robotic systems at Northwestern University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRxV5ik20Kw

Next was an intriguing talk by Sara Moreira on patenting, product development, and firm dynamics at the Workshop on Entrepreneurial Finance and Innovation (WEFI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6LPvoPS1YE&t=2s

Next was a compelling talk by Raghuram Rajan on startup "kill zones" adjacent to tech behemoths at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9htZruBy_g

Next was an engaging talk by Song Ma on interactions between startups and incumbents at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0I_tdNNvXE

Next was an informative talk by Arthur Korteweg on the risk and return of private equity at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq-aQ1YvfjI

Next was a fantastic talk by Michael Ewens on the relationship between gender, race, and entrepreneurship at WEFI. Ewens gives a great overview of the research in this space (albeit the talk is four years old, but still extremely relevant). Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS3Km2z0gfE

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Simcha Barkai on the relationship between reduced employment rates and corporate value creation in the US at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjO15tff-h4

Next was an great talk by Xavier Jaravel on the labor and product market effects of automation at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VuHyaQaLk8

Last was an excellent talk by Luke Taylor on the degree to which VCs stifle innovation at WEFI. Using data from pharmaceutical startups, Taylor convincingly shows that VCs that invest in multiple startups in a space reduce competition and new drug releases. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkyPmmg-4YY
