#AcademicRunPlaylist - 11/16/24

A selfie of me on a leaf-covered path through the forest on a sunny day, with the shadows of trees stretching across the ground. I'm a bald, middle-aged, white man with a red beard flecked with white. I'm wearing thick black sunglasses and a black shirt

Today was the start of a busy weekend, but at least I was able to get out a bit a listen to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a bunch of talks from the 2024 ACM UIST Conference:

Seongjun Kwan (thermal + pressure stimulation for VR) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV7ik09TfAQ

Jas Brooks (augmented breathing) - highly recommend - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hncnWF4xAOw

Yeonsu Kim (proprioception and tactile synthesis for VR) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrpVKHf7uCk

Zining Zhang (force feedback using water jets!) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyEU_gPF8pM

Qiuyu Lu (eco-friendly morphing devices) - highly recommend - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYUCCaIjAfs

Shunta Suzuki (mid-air gesture recognition for hearables) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkOKxxXfjEA

Hyunsung Cho (audio-haptic cursor for XR) - highly recommend - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcanMEpFoic

Xincheng Huang (cutouts and virtual replicas for VR collaboration) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeaw1di2ffM

Yoonho Lee (improving model robustness with NLP corrections) - highly recommend - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQBvJskVTR8

Next was an excellent talk by Elaine Short on assistive robotics. After centering the importance of disability in robot interaction design, Short presents a number of systems that explicitly expect noise/out of distribution events, with impressive results. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M97C9raMvzQ

Next was an intriguing talk by Yulia Zhestkova Grigsby on cross-border VC and tech spillovers at the Workshop on Entrepreneurial Finance and Innovation (WEFI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoqaKg9a9Zs

Next was a fantastic talk by Jessica Jeffers on the risk and return profile of impact funds at WEFI. While Jeffers shows that these funds do underperform the public markets, they do overperform VC funds! Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzJhyDPAmkA

Next was an amazing talk by David Robinson on behavioral economics and entrepreneurship at WEFI. Starting a company is a pretty insane thing to do (I should know!), and Robinson explores why people do it regardless. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v425ZXxqsN0

Next was a nice talk by Will Gornall on valuing startups at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRcZeYlZoDY

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Ramana Nanda on experimentation and VC investment strategies at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywTJoL4LTDc

Next was an informative talk by Ayako Yasuda on the role private equity industry in creative destruction at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf10mSaOilA

Last was an engaging talk by S. Abraham (Avri) Ravid on innovation under ambiguity and risk at WEFI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9Xh-wZz_IM
