The snow blower is still out of commission, and while it’s not the Taipei 101 I was still proud of free soloing my driveway while listening to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a slate of talks at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing:

Accounting for personalization in model behavior - Angelina Wang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4ilyQs3nEY

Prediction and prioritization for allocating societal resources - Sanmay Das - highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwXuSIj8Qrw

Impact of capacity constraints on RCT evaluation - Hannah Li https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuwBU7-Sfcc

Estimating the value of personalization - Emma Brunskill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFE44nnXSRg

Evaluation design - Ashia Wilson - highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HKeKt2JScM

Decision theoretic foundations for human-system collaboration - Jessica Hullman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3NR9p1Odhs

Statistical discrimination feedback loops - Jackie Baek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0th96qJWkg

Individual gaps in prediction generalization - Marzyeh Ghassemi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUFu_AzZxB8

Next was an interesting talk by Polo Chau on visual and algorithmic tools for understand large model behavior at Stanford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u74gb_DCtzo

Next was a great talk by Jonathan Lazar on methods and tools for born-accessible design at the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNG9cNndNdE

Last was “Diversity and Inclusion in Japan,” edited by Lailani Alcantara and Yoshiki Shinohara. This is a great collection of papers and essays on the state and dimension of diversity and inclusion efforts in Japan. Given that so much of the literature is on Europe and North America this is a fresh look at issues and approaches, with an aging population standing out as a poorly examined aspect of fairness efforts. There's a good mix of quantitative and theoretical work here, and the chapter on reasonable accommodations by Osamu Nagase, which leads off with a quote by none other than Don Corleone, is excellent. I also particularly liked the chapter on Vietnamese entrepreneurs in Japan by Thi Huong Tang and Lailani Alcantara. Highly recommend https://www.routledge.com/Diversity-and-Inclusion-in-Japan-Issues-in-Business-and-Higher-Education/Alcantara-Shinohara/p/book/9781032289908
