#AcademicRunPlaylist - 1/15/25

A partially frozen brook winding through a swamp, bordered by forest, on a clear, sunny day.

It was another cold one in Boston, but at least there was nice winter scenery to look at while I listened to talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist!

First was a nice talk by Tanner Mirrlees on the structure of work in the digital media and entertainment industries at the University of Toronto's DigiLabour lab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XVLFCNNRwY

First was an excellent conversation between Ann Lipton and Michael Levin on the decision striking the Nasdaq diversity rules and about ISS and Glass Lewis's consulting services on the Shareholder Primacy podcast. Obviously there's a lot that's problematic about the Nasdaq decision, but it is very interesting how they act as either a private company or a regulator in lawsuits depending on what is most advantageous. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz1v1JJAJyY

Next was an engaging panel on race, gender, and class in platform labor studies at DigiLabour with Laura Guimaraes Correa, Haley Kwan, Kruskaya Hidalgo Cordero, and Sophie Bernard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WWDPi4-IaM

Next was a compelling discussion with Lant Pritchett on the dominance of RCTs in development economics and whether other approaches might be more appropriate/accurate, as well as examination of the centrality of economic growth for human wellbeing improvement on the VoxDev podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqmWey40G7I

Next was an interesting talk by Tiziano Bonini and Emiliano Trere' on how people can resist algorithmic platforms at DigiLabour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z-rihSLw_8

Next was a great talk by Hari Subramonyam on rethinking the AI-UX boundary for designing human-AI experiences at BayCHI. I absolutely hate how we've defaulted to stochastic command line interfaces, and Subramonyam demonstrates how to create more useful systems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZhxKmoVwUY

Last was an important panel on looking at co-operative models in the African diaspora that attempt to move beyond racial capitalism at DigiLabour with Caroline Shenaz Hossein, Sharon Wright Austin, Kevin Edmonds, Salewa Yinka Olawoye, and Silvane Silva https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C956sZQFVMU
